Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX/ZJSY) opened in 1994 on Hainan Island's southern coast, about 11 km northwest of downtown Sanya. It is the main gateway to Sanya's tropical resort areas, including Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay, and handles a mix of domestic and international traffic. The airport is a key hub for Hainan's tourism-driven economy and offers connections across China and select international destinations.
💡 Local Tip
Frequent visitors pre-book a hotel pickup or ride-hailing for late-night arrivals, since public buses and the rail station may stop running; also save your hotel address in Chinese to show drivers.
🚖 Getting There
Taxis and ride-hailing are the most convenient way to reach downtown Sanya or resort bays; use the official taxi queue or a reputable app and have your destination written in Chinese. Airport shuttle buses run to several city points and resort areas, while the Sanya Phoenix Airport Railway Station connects to Hainan's high-speed rail network. Allow extra time during winter peak season and Chinese public holidays, when roads and terminals are busiest.
