✨ AI-Enhanced Insights
Egal International Airport (HGA/HCMH) is the primary international gateway to Hargeisa and Somaliland, located just a few kilometers southeast of the city center. Formerly known as Hargeisa International Airport, it was renamed after Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal, a key figure in Somaliland's modern history. It handles regional and international flights and serves as the main arrival point for most visitors to the region.
💡 Local Tip
Locals often still call it Hargeisa Airport, so use that name with taxi drivers if 'Egal' isn't immediately understood. Also keep small change in US dollars or Somaliland shillings for taxis and porters.
🚖 Getting There
Taxis are the main way to reach the city; they wait outside the terminal and fares should be agreed before you get in. Some hotels offer airport pickups, which can be more convenient and predictable. The drive is short, but allow extra time during busy flight arrivals or if traffic is heavy.
