✨ AI-Enhanced Insights
Payerne Air Base (IATA: VIP, ICAO: LSMP) is a Swiss Air Force military airfield in the Vaud canton, near the town of Payerne on the Swiss Plateau. It is one of Switzerland's main jet bases, home to F/A-18 Hornet operations and the Clin d'Ailes aviation museum, and it gained fame as the base for Solar Impulse's pioneering solar-powered flights. The airfield is not a commercial airport, but it opens to the public for major airshows and events.
💡 Local Tip
Frequent visitors know that weekday mornings offer the best chance of catching training sorties, while the Clin d'Ailes museum is a worthwhile fallback on quiet days; always respect perimeter signs and never photograph sensitive areas.
🚖 Getting There
Payerne Air Base has no scheduled commercial service, so most visitors arrive via Payerne railway station, served by trains from Lausanne, Fribourg, and Bern. From the station, take a taxi or local bus to the base; during airshows, special shuttle buses usually run from the station or designated parking areas. By car, use the A1 motorway and follow signs for Payerne, but expect limited parking and traffic restrictions on event days.
